Tuning
Tuning is the process of adjusting the tension of the strings to bring them into harmony. Pianos are generally tuned to A-440. This means that the “A” note above middle C vibrates 440 times a second. Fixed pitch instruments such as horns and reed instruments are designed to play at this pitch. There are, give or take, 230 strings in a piano. It takes Grant around 1-1/2 hours to tune the average piano.
Regulation
As pianos wear the action (mechanism) occasionally needs adjustment to provide the best “touch” or finessability possible. As the parts wear the adjustments drift away from factory specifications. Adjustments can be made to the action to bring it closer to specifications and restore the “touch”.
Repairs
Pianos are amazingly durable instruments that with some care can provide generations of joy through music. Occasionally parts may break or wear such that they need repair or replacement. Grant is versed in providing these services.
Voicing
An aspect of piano maintenance is voicing, which is the manipulation of the tone of the piano. Various techniques are used to manipulate the tone including softening or hardening of the hammers. This will make the piano “brighter” or “mellower”. Often minor voicing is done to make the tone even across the keyboard.
